2. What is Toastmasters?
UTET is one of 13 000 Toastmasters clubs in 116 countries. We're a group of University of Toronto students dedicated to public speaking, effective communication, and leadership. UTET serves U of T students from all disciplines. We provide a welcoming and supportive environment for fellow students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills. By giving prepared and improvised speeches, our meetings are chances to become strong and capable communicators. We meet on a weekly basis (excluding holidays and breaks) for a 2 hour meeting to develop these professional skills.
3. What do we do during meetings?
The meeting comprises of 2 parts, prepared speeches and spontaneous speeches. Prepared speeches are prepared a week in advance and must be notified to the VP of Education within a week’s notice. The topic of the speeches can be of any topic (within reason) but must apply certain speech aspects from the Competent Communicator Manual ranging from Body Language to Vocal Variety. Spontaneous speeches are off-the-cuff speeches lasting 1-2 minutes. The speech topics will be given to you without prior notice until you are on stage. The purpose of this speech is to develop coherent speech skills and become comfortable when speaking in front of an audience.
